Chapter Five

I walked from the room with my ID and a few bills from my stash stuffed in my pocket. I could hear their voices downstairs and I was drawn to them like bees to honey. First, their was Cooper’s rich, silk-like voice, then there was Ty’s baritone, and Jax’s that just oozed confidence no matter what he said. He was like ease and comfort all wrapped into one. Out of all of us, he’d had the easiest life growing up. He had parents that adored him, natural abilities that seemed to call to the opposite sex like nothing else. He was a football player, captain of course, played basketball, too, so it really shouldn’t have shocked me that he’d moved on to bull riding. I’d have to make sure to go to one of his rodeos the first chance I got. Dammit if he wasn’t even sexier for having the balls to do that.

I walked into the kitchen and all three of them stopped talking at once. One by one, they looked me over like I was a popsicle on a hot summer’s day. “Well, yeehaw,” Jax said. He strode forward, took me by the hips, and dipped me. I fell back in a laugh until his lips covered mine. This wasn’t the quick peck it had been when he first saw me again, there was something behind this one. His lips were soft, yielding, almost begging me to make a move.

Instead, I pushed him off me and shoved him in the shoulders to wipe at my lips. My heart sunk and I turned away from them all. I had to remind myself that it had just been Jax. That he’d only been playing around, but bile rose in my throat anyway at the thought of those other pair of lips. The ones that just kept taking and taking until I’d had enough. A hand touched my shoulder and I jumped.

A loud thwack echoed through the small room and Jax grunted. “I was just messin’ around.”

“You scared her.”

I turned, finding three very worried pairs of eyes staring at me. “I’m fine,” I said, finally getting control over my emotions. I could trust these three. I could trust them with my life and then some. “Maybe just wait for permission next time, Parnell.”

I stared at my guys. Both Jax and Ty were dressed in their cowboy best. Clean pairs of tight jeans, button-up shirts and their dressy cowboy hats that were just like their work hats, just cleaner. Cooper, though, he was dressed in a pair of sweats and an old shirt. My gaze ran up his feet to this chest then his eyes. “You not comin’?”

He shook his head, did a once-over on me again, and then headed for the stairs. I wanted to follow after him and demand that we talk this out. To ask him if he’d actually heard me knock on his door earlier, and I might’ve done just that except Ty grabbed my arm. “Come on, Loralei.
